What is Capitec Pay South Africa

Capitec Pay is Capitec Bank’s own payment method for online purchases and deposits. It launched in February 2023 and was the first bank-endorsed payment initiation API in South Africa, built on open banking principles aligned with the European PSD2 framework. It forms part of the South African Reserve Bank’s Vision 2025 push towards real-time, bank-led payments.

With traditional Instant EFT methods like Ozow or SiD, you type your banking credentials into a third-party screen. Capitec Pay works differently. You enter your cellphone number, ID number, or Capitec account number at the checkout, and then you approve the payment inside the Capitec app on your phone. Your banking login details are never shared with the betting site or the payment gateway.

Capitec Pay is available only to Capitec Bank clients. If you bank elsewhere, you will need to use a different deposit method.

How To Deposit with Capitec Pay at a South African Betting Site

The process is the same at every licensed South African betting site that supports Capitec Pay. Before you start, make sure you have an active Capitec Bank account, the Capitec app installed on your phone, and your cellphone number registered to your Capitec profile.

How Withdrawals Work with Capitec Pay South Africa

Capitec Pay is what is known as a credit-push payment method. That means you initiate and approve the payment yourself, and the money is pushed to the merchant. Because of how it works, it is used as a deposit method at South African betting sites rather than a withdrawal method.

When you want to withdraw your winnings, the betting site will typically pay out via standard EFT to the Capitec bank account registered on your profile, once FICA verification is complete.

Capitec Pay deposits are linked to your verified Capitec profile, which makes it straightforward for operators to match the deposit account to your name.
