It was originally established under the Limpopo Gambling Act of 1996 and is currently retained and governed by the Limpopo Gambling Act No. 3 of 2013, which came into operation on 1 September 2014.

The LGB is a juristic person and a Schedule 3C public entity under the Public Finance Management Act. It is regulated by the Limpopo Gambling Act, the National Gambling Act and the Public Finance Management Act, and ensures compliance with the Financial Intelligence Centre Act and the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act as they apply to the gambling industry.

The LGB regulates all gambling activities within Limpopo. Its mandate includes licensing gambling operators and individuals, ensuring compliance with provincial and national gambling legislation, promoting responsible gambling, eradicating illegal gambling in the province and facilitating sustainable local economic development through the gambling industry.
